Name:Lia Sloane

Bio:

God: Athena
Mortal Name: Liadán Sloane (usually referred to as Lia or Sloane)
Mortal Age: 28

Domain(s) of Power: Athena is the goddess of wisdom, war, and domestic crafts. She was a figure that was often called on to protect cities and the patron goddess of warriors (her opposite is Ares, the god of war). She would often pick and choose warriors to deserve her blessing, and they in turn became deadly on the field of battle with the enhancements placed upon them from the goddess. Common gifts bestowed were speed, stealth, superior strength, endurance, and she sometimes cleared the minds of warriors so they may become more focused. A gift she did not give as freely was the ability to see other gods, a gift which she bestowed upon Diomedes for a short time to spy out Ares, Apollo, and Aphrodite on the opposing side of the battlefield.

Another power was that she was able to change her own shape and appearance, and sometimes even the forms of others. The form of the Owl, her symbolic representation, was a favourite. More often than not, however, Athena often appeared to mortals as someone they knew to guide them. The goddess also wielded both a powerful Aegis (in which she set the head of Medusa after the gorgon was slain by Athena's hero Perseus) and was sometimes permitted to wield the lightning bolts of Zeus. But with her wide array of powers, Athena was perhaps most known for her advice, battle strategies, and the creator of many plans to further her own goals and those of family she was working with at the time.

Current status of Power: The goddess no longer can bestow many of the blessings on mortals she once did, nor can she change her shape or appearance as easily as she once could, let alone turning any more mortals into spiders or elevating any to immortality. Her primary source of power, as small as it is, sits in Athens with the descendants of a Priestess that had been alive when the gods fell from their power. The Palladiums that once bore enough power to protect a city became nothing more than the material they were made out of. She can change the basics of her physical traits each time she changed identities, still has an affinity to owls, and usually has enough power stored up that she may call on it for a boost in her combat abilities should there be a situation that calls for more than simply tactics of fighting.

Appearance: Overall, Lia is a woman of average height and fairly thin, though her build is well-toned for her size as she often works out and maintains a healthy diet and lifestyle. Athena chose straight black hair, usually kept in length around her shoulders, and plain brown eyes. She chose a slightly more feminine appearance instead of the more tomboyish look she usually ended up with, though she never shuns away from a simple t-shirt and pair of jeans.

Personality: The once mighty Goddess Athena was always a figure known for her calm composure, clear thinking, determination, seriousness, and a high toleration for some of the more reckless members of her family. When she had a goal in mind she was hell-bent to accomplish it and would manipulate and bribe both mortals and family until she succeeded, despite her best intentions. Although she was humble and calm, she (like many others of the family) bore a tendency to feel and act superior. She was Zeus’ favourite daughter and did not like being challenged for the spot, nor did she like being beaten in any sort of competition. She had turned a mortal to a spider and teamed up with Hera to fuel the Trojan War over Helen because of this.

Having lived centuries as a mortal had lessened the worst of her personality habits, though they will never disappear. She has little reason to feel superior after the demotion of status. As such, she maintains more of a friendly and humble nature than that of the intimidating wise woman she once seemed like. She almost always maintains a calm composure and her sense of humour has much improved. Her emotions rarely take control, but when they do it has a tendency to have devastating results.

Likes: Weaving, books, fighting/combat styles, bird-watching, making fun of wrestling on TV, women, steak, baklava

Dislikes: Romantic relationships with men, arrogance, hubris, people messing with her plans, family squabbling, country music

Past History: Athena was the first born in the second generation of the gods of Olympus - born from Metis and Zeus. Zeus had swallowed Metis in paranoia of a prophecy while she was pregnant, and after the god’s head felt as if it were about to burst, Prometheus split his head with an axe and Athena sprung forth clad in full armour. It was no surprise that Athena was considered the favored child of the King of the gods, having been born solely by him.

She was the patron goddess of Athens, which had been named after her after she won a competition with her uncle, Poseidon, over the territory. She had dealings with many mortals - often choosing strong warriors to receive her blessing. Athena did such things as add fuel to the fire of the Trojan war (allying with Poseidon and Hera on the side of the Achaeans) and reared the serpent-king of Athens, Erichthonius.

When the faith in the gods began to fail and their world began to crumble, Athena stayed in Olympus almost to the very end. It was the failing in her powers that made her finally depart their mountain home and descend to live amongst the mortals. She did not, however, leave Greece.

For many years she lived in her city of Athens, watching her world change and shift around her. She took refuge in the home of one of her still faithful Priestesses. The Priestess was killed a few short years after Athena came to live with the widowed woman and her two daughters by a thief attempting to rob the home. Feeling much grief for the loss and the fact she was away and unable to have defended the Priestess, Athena remained and raised the two daughters just as she had raised Erichthonius. To this day, the faith in the goddess remains in the family and the duties of priestess passed from generation to generation.

Athena spent many lifetimes roaming throughout Europe. She kept moving slowly north, staying only in one area for years at a time if she felt comfortable (which was never a common occurrence). The loss of her status and the scattering of her family had taken quite a toll and it was a heavy burden that took centuries to shake off.

It wasn’t until the 1500s that Athena broke out of her shell after migrating to Ireland. She longed for the days of epic heroes and adventures, and it was the adventure of the sea that called her attention. It was also that lifetime when she had first made her mark in history as the Irish pirate Grace O’Malley. Always one for intricate planning, she wove a web of a believable life. She indeed married twice out of convenience, but she remained ever true to her chastity (both men she had married had been of questionable sexuality, escaping the harsh judgment of a lifestyle). She had adopted three children while married to her first husband, and the babe born on a ship was the child of a disguised crewman that her current husband had a few too many drunken nights with. When Athena grew tired of the adventure and fighting amongst the sea, she spoke with and gained a pardon from Queen Elizabeth of England until she ended that life in 1603.

She dwelt in England for some time after that while England was beginning to settle in the Americas. It was there that she bumped into her own father and spent some joyous time with the familiar friend and family member before he moved on to follow the settlers to the new country. Athena kept in contact with him since, not wanting to lose her grip on the only family member she had - and an important one at that.

The second appearance in history, and the last, that Athena made was as Emmeline Pankhurst in 1858. She fought for Women’s rights, staged another elaborate lifetime to be written in text, and left that life behind in 1903. She had traveled once to America in that lifetime, and after Emmeline’s death, she decided to travel there once again.

Athena spent many more quiet years in the States before returning to Greece to see how much her country and city had changed. She was happy to find that the descendants of the two children she once cared for still believed so fiercely in her. Athena had called on her powers very rarely in the past years, mainly to change her appearance as she slipped into another identity. But even then, Athens grew old and she returned again to Ireland.

Ireland was home for several years before receiving an interesting letter from her father, explaining he had now settled in Miami, Florida. Loneliness had caught up with the goddess and she once again made her way to the States to stay with Zeus.

On Family: When it comes to family, she has various relationships with other members. She adores Zeus and has good opinions of Demeter, Dionysus, Hermes, and Artemis. She has never really been at odds with Hera though she wouldn’t consider the Goddess a friend nor a mother. Athena harbors a particular dislike of Aphrodite, has a mixed relationship with Poseidon, and is almost always at odds with Ares. Most others of the family she is neutral towards, or has very little opinion of altogether.

I am not Athena, she is a myth. This journal is just for fun. I also have nothing to do with Cristina Scabbia. All graphics made by moi.
